Dark Shadows by L. V. Gaudet: Grayson is introduced in this inaugural foray into his world. Everywhere he goes, he sees monsters and witnesses their cold collection of the spirits of the dying. Called devourers of souls by some, he is certain they are after him for reasons he cannot begin to guess at. An artist by nature, his sketches are more than prophetic. They mirror the disturbing assaults of the soul takers.

Called devourers of souls by some, they come to take the souls of the dead. Grayson is not in the story this time, but the soul takers are.

The Darkest Night by L. V. Gaudet: As dusk descends on a cemetery, people awake, confused how they came to be there. They are locked in. Shadows deepen and night falls, bringing disturbing terror with it.

Kailyn almost screamed. Panic clenched her chest in a tight fist that would not let her breathe. It felt like it stopped her heart from pounding, although she could still hear its thrumming low and persistent in her ears.
The skeletal face was withered, the skin mottled dry and papery wrinkled. The sunken cheeks sunk further when it opened its mouth and brought the other skeletal hand up, placing the index finger to its crinkled lips in a “hush” sign.
Her eyes locked with its, mesmerized by those shocking eyes, unable to look away. The flesh around them seemed almost melted, sagging into the wrinkled cheeks, the red watery flesh behind the bottom lids visible. The eyes were shot through with a thin web of veins and discolored, filmy looking. The hair framing the face hung down dry and stiff in a tangled ruined bun in shades of white and grey.
When the voice came, she was surprised it sounded anything like human. It was dry and cracked.
“Come, little girl, hide,” it whispered at her.
Kailyn was too terrified to move. The skeletal hands gripped her arms below the shoulders, and it pulled her back away from the shambling shadow in the mist.
A sob caught in her throat. Trapped and unable to escape, it became a solid lump that threatened to choke off her air.
The bony arms wrapped around her, and the cracked voice whispered in her ear.
       “Shush.”
It dragged her down deeper into darkness, into the cool cave-like stillness of a hollow inside narrow concrete walls. It huddled there, hugging the little girl against its skeletal thin frame, shivering. In a low moaning voice, it began to hum very quietly, its cheek against her hair and mouth close to her ear.

The shadows come for them. Unstoppable. The soul takers. Each hour that presses towards dawn, more are taken. They cannot escape. Some abandon hope, acquiescing calmly to their fate. When the sun finally comes, only one will be left. She is different from the rest.

“Kailyn sat there huddled, whimpering and hugging her legs. She rocked back and forth and stared wild eyed at nothing, saying over and over and over, “I'm not dead. I'm not dead. I'm not dead.”“

The Darkest Night includes the poem “Twi the Light” at the beginning..
